Beerfug Rides Again! Brian Deitte Speaks about Video Players!

A new incarnation of Beerfug begins Wednesday November 3, 2010. We are converting to an all new, once a year format. And this year’s speaker will be Brian Deitte!. Brian will be giving a preview of his RIA Unleashed talk. The talk is titled “The Future of Video Players.” Description: Come to this session to see where things are headed in the complex world of online video.  We’ll take a dive into video for Flash 10.1, Android, iDevices, and HTML5.  Code examples will be given with Brightcove video players, but the talk will be geared to those with little technical knowledge of video online.

The meeting will take place at Brightcove at 7pm and there will be pizza and beer. Here’s a map to Brightcove. It’s in Kendall Sq.

Tonight’s beers:

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
Smuttynose IPA
SteelHead Pale Ale
Pretty Things American Saison (big bottle)
Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Dark Barleywine (big bottle)

Beerfug on hiatus

Beerfug is taking a break. You’ll have to drink beer on your own dime for a while. We should be back in the Spring. Why, you ask? Well, Sam and Brian just had babies, so they’re busy. And, I’m lazy.

Model Driven Development w Flex and LCDS

This Wednesday Ed Solovey from Brightcove will be discussing Model Driven Development w/ Flex 4 and LCDS 3. From Ed…

The talk is a summary of and deeper dive into Christophe Coenraets’s excellent MAX ’09 demo/presentation – Model Driven Development with Flex 4 and LCDS3.  I plan on going over the architecture and design motivations for the model driven development functionality in LCDS 3.  I am not planning on repeating the demo and encourage those interested to view it from the link above.
Here is a brief bio:
I joined Brightcove as a Senior Software Engineer three months ago and have been working on our transcoding functionality.  Prior to Brightcove, I spent three years at Adobe working on the data management functionality in Flex/LiveCycle DataServices. Most recently, I led the effort around model driven development in LCDS 3.0.  Prior to Adobe, I spent four years, including a year in the SF Bay area, working at Oracle on a business intelligence application built on top of Oracle OLAP. Before Oracle, I was at MIT, working on my master’s thesis in the Theory of Distributed Computing group.

As always, the meeting will take place at Brightcove at 7pm and there will be pizza and beer. Here’s a map to Brightcove. It’s in Kendall Sq.

We will be starting on time this month as Ed needs to leave at 8pm.

Beerfug Holiday Party Tonight

7pm at Characters, which is located right under Brightcove. Sorry, you need to pay for your own drinks. But, the popcorn is FREE! No topic, just having a few drinks to celebrate the holidays. But, as always,  if you have any Flex questions or problems, please bring them.

Brian Deitte – Flex Speed Master!

Brian’s going to talk about speeding up compile time, reducing file size, and improving swf performance. He will take a look at TAAS and other 3rd party tools. If we were to extend these concepts to beer, we would serve a quickly brewed, low calorie beer with great ‘drinkability’. However, that sounds like sucky beer, so we won’t do that.

Darron Schall Thursday October 8, 2009

Darron Schall will be speaking this Thursday (yes Thursday – not Wednesday) October 8, 2009. He will be talking about 2nd Generation Flex Micro-Architecture Frameworks (Mate, Swiz). Location (Brightcove), time (7pm), pizza (yes), beer (yes) – are the same as always. Hope to see you there.

Bring Your Problems!

Wednesday September 2 is a “Bring Your Problems” (or a “we didn’t get our act together and get anyone to speak” session). Same place. Same time.
